About this property
A spacious period home full of character, set in a lovely semi-rural location in Oakley Green. The property offers generous living space and a versatile layout, plus wonderful gardens.
Description
This attractive and substantial period home offers well-balanced accommodation with a strong sense of space and flexibility throughout. The main entrance opens into an impressive full-height reception hall, finished with cherry wood panelling, solid timber flooring, a staircase rising to the first floor and a Minster stone fireplace. From the hall are doors to a formal sitting and dining room, a separate study or library, a cloakroom and access to the cellar.
The rear of the house has been configured to suit modern family life, centred around a large open-plan kitchen, dining and family area overlooking the garden. A full-height bay window provides an excellent garden outlook, while the dining space features a vaulted ceiling with exposed oak beams and bi-folding doors opening onto the terrace. The kitchen itself is fitted with bespoke, craftsman-made cabinetry, granite work surfaces and a generous central island, offering extensive storage. Appliances include a two-oven gas Aga, integrated Bosch dishwasher, Bosch under-counter fridge and space for a range cooker. A further family room adjoins, also part-vaulted and dual aspect, with wood burning stove and bi-folding doors opening directly onto the patio.
An oak-framed side entrance leads to a vaulted utility room with fitted storage, butler sink and space for both washing machine and tumble dryer. There is also a ground floor bedroom with a triple aspect and bi-folding doors, currently used as an office and served by a nearby shower room, making it ideal for guests, extended family or au pair use. The arrangement of the ground floor allows for a variety of layouts depending on requirements.
On the first floor are four bedrooms in total. The principal and second bedrooms both benefit from en-suite shower rooms, while the remaining two bedrooms are served by a family bathroom. All sanitaryware is by Duravit, and each bedroom includes built-in wardrobes.
Gardens & Grounds
Electric gates open onto a gravelled driveway providing ample parking. A second set of solid oak electric gates gives access to additional parking and a detached double garage with oak doors, together with an attached workshop, store and studio. A separate oak-framed entrance provides side access to the house.
The glorious gardens wrap around the property, offering a high degree of privacy and open views across adjoining horse paddocks. Largely laid to lawn, the grounds have been carefully landscaped and include a natural stone terrace for outdoor dining, established borders, a vegetable and flower garden, a mature Koi pond and a orchard with cherry, plum and apple trees.
Sellers Historical Note
Braywood Linn is a country house of local historic note, built in 1875 and celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2025. Originally part of the New Lodge estate owned by the Van de Weyer family, whose connections included Queen Victoria, the house is believed to have served as the estate manager’s residence and still bears the family crest.
Sold in 1915 when the estate was broken up, the property later operated as The Braywood Inn before being acquired in the 1960s by a timber merchant, who reconfigured parts of the interior, including the installation of the distinctive cherry-panelled hallway and staircase.
