STORY
The Astronomia is the embodiment of 21st century ultra-high-end watchmaking and a globally recognized symbol of Jacob & Co watchmaking expertise. A world-first both in the boldness of its unprecedented concept and its entirely mechanical construction, the Astronomia has gone beyond impressive horological achievements to becoming an outstanding multidisciplinary engineering accomplishment.
The Astronomia Maestro Worldtime expands the Astronomia universe with an elaborate and rare minute repeater carillon chiming complication and a new Worldtime complication as an addition to the iconic four-arm vertical movement The time display has been moved to the center of the dial. The movement platform rotates every 10 minutes above a hand-painted Milky Way galaxy with planets on an aventurine base
The Astronomia Maestro Worldtime is a spectacular, three-dimensional and absolutely unparalleled achievement in horology, the Astronomia Maestro amazes on its every level.
EXCLUSIVE ASTRONOMIA CALIBER
The four arms of the Astronomia Maestro carry the gravitational triple-axis tourbillon timekeeping organ of the watch, Planet Earth crafted from a magnesium globe in hand-painted blue, an all-new date and moon-phase display featuring a new, Jacob-Cut® 1-carat diamond, as well as a miniature, hand-crafted astronaut that spins through the space inside the Astronomia. This four-arm assembly completes a rotation around the center of the watch and over a spectacular backdrop in 10 minutes. Another astounding feature of the Astronomia Maestro is how each pair of opposing arms are perfectly calculated counterweights of one another – a testament to peerless materials engineering and watch movement design. By having equal weights on these opposing arms, its axles are relieved from strain and increased pull, as the movement takes up different orientations in space.
TRIPLE-AXIS TOURBILLON
The tourbillon was originally invented to provide improved timekeeping performance for a pocket watch. The Astronomia Tourbillon brings this 200-plus-year-old complication to breathtaking levels of modern refinement and complexity.
This triple-axis tourbillon is at the forefront of modern watchmaking. The delicately decorated cage encapsulates the balance wheel, hairspring, escape wheel and several other important components. Characterized by this openworked cage, this outstanding tourbillon rotates on three axes simultaneously. It is a constellation of superbly finished components that, when expertly assembled and fine-tuned, allows the Astronomia caliber to keep accurate time throughout its 60-hour power reserve.
A full rotation on the 1st axis takes exactly 60 seconds, as a nod towards the traditional single-axis tourbillon. The 2nd axis of rotation is completed in 90 seconds, while the 3rd axis of rotation is made possible by the 10-minute, four-arm rotating platform of the Astronomia movement. This makes for a bold new way at how tourbillons can function, when engineered with cutting-edge, ultra-modern technologies and timeless horological heritage in mind.
MINIATURE ASTRONAUT
Expanding upon its inspired ties to outer space, the Astronomia Maestro Worldtime has a hand-painted, miniature astronaut fixed to one of the four rotating arms of the Astronomia four-arm vertical movement. The astronaut weighs just 0.2 grams or 0.07 ounces. It orbits along with the three other arms of the caliber, taking 10 minutes to pass over the Milky Way aventurine backdrop, while rotating around its own axis once every 90 seconds.
MINUTE REPEATER CARILLON
The Minute Repeater Carillon is widely and historically referenced among the most challenging complications ever conceived in fine watchmaking. As a chiming mechanism, on demand of its owner, the minute repeater of the Astronomia Maestro begins to strike the hours, quarters and minutes with its three hammers and gongs, making for a brilliantly refined, musical interpretation of time.
As a first in watchmaking, the Astronomia Maestro’s three gongs crisscross above a hand-painted Milky Way aventurine dial. The gongs are struck by their respective hammers when activated by a slider. The sound is clear and loud, the chimes are accurate and painstakingly calibrated, making the Manufacture JCFM11A caliber a true Maestro in haute horlogerie.
WORLDTIME FUNCTION
An oversized globe of the earth on the one of the arms of the Astronomia four-arm vertical serves as a worldtime complication, providing an accurate time among time zones throughout the world. This globe rotates on an axis every 24 hours while rotating with the platform every 10 minutes inside the dial.
JACOB CUT® DIAMOND
The Jacob Cut is the signature cut for the diamonds and gems that appear on all Jacob & Co. Astronomia timepieces. It always marks its presence on one of the arms of the Astronomia vertical movement and at times it graces other parts of its extra-large watches. It is a distinctive work of innovation, creativity and execution.
The spherical gem is a unique cut exclusive to Jacob & Co.
The Jacob Cut diamond starts out as a much larger rough, up to twice the size as the finished product. Quality is important, with clarity being the most prized of the four Cs of diamond quality. If there is any sign of an inclusion the diamond must be scrapped.
The rough diamond is first cut by machine into a spherical shape, near the size of the final diamond. Then the master gem cutter shapes the stone by hand, cutting each of the 288 facets while maintaining its shape. The danger is that the stone will become oblong, losing its round shape. To be used in the Astronomia Collection, the Jacob-Cut diamond must be completely round and weigh exactly as much as the other three satellites to maintain stability of the movement.
Another challenge is ensuring the precise dimensions of the facets. If the gem cutter puts slightly too much pressure on the stone while adding the facets, too much of the diamond will be cut away, and the sphere will be too small to use. The cutting process takes at least two weeks of dedicated, painstaking work.
The Jacob Cut is most recognizable on the Astronomia watch as a diamond that extends from one of the four arms of the vertical Astronomia movement. It rotates at different rates various depending on the other elements and the theme of the watch. However, the cut has been applied on colored gemstones and placed in the dial in other ways.
CASE & CRYSTAL
The Astronomia Maestro’s case measures 50 millimeters in diameter and 26 millimeters thick between the highest point of its specially curved front sapphire crystal and the lowest point of its case. Its 18K Rose Gold case holds a single-piece sapphire crystal window around its periphery, allowing for unhindered viewing of the spectacular caliber inside. The airy, spacious look and feel of the Astronomia Maestro is further enhanced by the openworked lugs, a minute, yet important detail that drives ones vision towards the face of the timepiece.
DIAL & HANDS
Time is displayed by the central-mounted subdial atop the hand-wound Manufacture JCFM11A caliber. Crafted from a combination of aluminum and titanium and designed with an openworked structure, the time display of the Astronomia Maestro was designed to be as light as possible, given its unprecedented position, high above the movement. The time is indicated by Gun Blue metallic finished hands and applied curved indices.
